New acquisition
Death stoked Darwin's success
Our exciting and most recent acquisition, the journal of the HMS Beagle’s first captain, Pringle Stokes, is now on display in the Mitchell wing. Stokes’ story is quite dramatic and ended in suicide shortly after his last journal entry on 12 July 1828. Had it not been for this unfortunate incident, Charles Darwin would never have been invited to join the Beagle’s epic voyage around the world including Australia, where he created scientific history.
